My illustation of Brookes Work..

When Brookestarts to draw the illustations she starts with the pencil out line and starts to add colour in stages with coloued pencils and markers, here i just used coloured pencils to add a small bit of colour. I used both coloured pencil and markers.

Brooke Hegal's History ..

Brooke Hegal earned a bachelor’s degree in Fashion Design from the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York with a specialization in art. While in school she was focused on wardrobe and styling so she attained internships for Sex and the City, Saturday Night Live, and Cynthia Rowley. When Brooke graduated she worked as a styling assistant to TV host and celebrity stylist, Robert Verdi. Then Brooke was a wardrobe supervisor for an off Broadway show. Her next career move was being a designer at Hearst Magazines for nearly 4 years. She designed products for House Beautiful, Cosmo, Seventeen, Country Living.

First and foremost are the Prismacolor pencils in cool gray 90%, she use's this pencil on every single illustration. Black can be too harsh, especially when outlining the figures and drawing facial details. These pencils are an essential must have, at least for this fashion illustrator. It's the finishing touch tool that she outlines with add the facial details, and all the clothing seams and trims.

Brush-tip markers are next. Sometimes people are surprised that her illustrations are all created with markers and pencil.

The second brands of brush-tip marker she use's are the Staedtler Mars Graphic 3000's. They are also double ended, but with these one end is a fine tip and the other is the brush. she has been using these to render hair ever since my college days and feel that they're really the secret to my success behind some of my most popular fashion illustrations like Vogue, Hostess, and Lily.

The last "secret weapon" that she shared is probably the biggest surprise as she does not use it for what it's designed to be used for. Drum roll please...It’s a white out pen! The white out pen is used for all my sequins, beading, pearls, and sometimes as that little sparkle in the eyes. The way to pull off the beading or sequin effect correctly is to first create a shadow for the beads or pearls with a black dot made with a Sharpie marker. Then you dot over the black with the white out pen and viola, you have your glitz and glam.

In this illustation you can see here where Brooke has used the white tip-ex pen for the white dots to stand out on the dress.
